Bernard Lee Lipps 87 of Etowah, TN passed away from life on Friday May 3, 2019. He lived in Etowah for 47 years where he served as a city commissioner for several terms. In 1953 Bernard served in the United States Army Signal Corps and was stationed at Fort Richardson, Anchorage, Alaska, as part of operation north star and survived field operations in 50 degrees below zero weather.
Bernard was of the Baptist Faith, and a 50 year member of Conasauga #396 Masonic Lodge, Ocoee, Tn. He was a charter member of the Chattanooga Scottish Rite. He retired from Oak Ridge National laboratories, Y-12 as an electrician.
Bernard was born in McMinn County February 12, 1932, son of George William Lipps, Sr. and Florence Moore Lipps. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Helen Trotter Lipps, Son Alvin L. Lipps, grandchildren: Jeramey Lipps and Hannah Lipps. Step-daughters: Gayle Trotter Puett, Karen Trotter Puett (Wendell). Grand-daughters: Wendy Jones (Lloyd), Shelly Lairmore (Joe) and Mandy Puett. Great-grandchildren Dalten and Claudia Lairmore, brothers: Alvin (Cindy) of Knoxville, Curtis (Jeanette) of Dayton.
Preceded in death by his parents, sister Anna Mae Lipps Ingram, brother George Lipps, Jr. and two infant siblings Mancel and Alma Jewel, great-grandson Dawson Lairmore, and Son-n-law Doyle Puett.
He will long be remembered for his annual Garden at the corner of 9 th street and Louisiana Avenue. Many residents helped themselves to his produce without his objection.
Funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday May 7, 2019 in the chapel of the Bordwine Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Hatcher officiating. Family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. and proceed to Coghill Cemetery for the 11:00 a.m. committal service with Military Honors.
