Charles Maynard Underwood, 82, a native of Athens and a resident of Delano, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2014, at his residence. A son of the late Homer and Edith Underwood, he was a member of Delano Baptist Church and former Commander of the VFW of Etowah. Charles was a veteran of the Korean Was serving in the U.S. Air Force and was retired form Niota Hosiery Mill. He was preceded in death by his parents, listed above; sister, Stella Underwood; and brother, Ray Underwood. Survivors include wife, Mayme Poteet Underwood of Delano; Children, Charles Underwood, Jr. and Scot Underwood of Tellico Plains, Linda Hacker and Lynn Willett of Athens; brother, Donald Underwood, of Sweetwater; sisters, Hazel Petitt of Niota and Vonzel Miller of Sweetwater; Sisters-in-law, Maxine Hunt of Delano and Edith Poteet of Chattanooga; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Choley Garren and special friends, Stephen and Amy Vaughn and daughter, Hannah.A graveside service will be held Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Delano Cemetery with military honors. Pastor Benny Thomas and Layspeaker Dennis Bordwine will officiate.
