Frances Jay Brown "Fran" Dorward, 92, of Etowah, TN formerly of Mooresville, NC passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2024.
Preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Dorward; son, Bruce E. Dorward; brother Ralph C. Brown; and granddaughter, Susannah F Wilson.
Fran graduated from Women's College in Greensboro, NC. She attained a Masters of Education Degree from University of Tennessee. She taught school in North Carolina and Tennessee, concluding her teaching career at McMinn County High School. In later years, she was active in many organizations including United Methodist Women, Meals on Wheels, and CONTACT suicide hotline. She was a member of St Paul's United Methodist Church and took mission trips to Bimini and Costa Rico.
Fran was a writer and author, including "Damn Greed", an oral history of the damming of the Little Tennessee River, "Up Rooted" a work of fiction, and numerous book reviews and articles.
Fran was a thoughtful and caring mother, community member and friend, quick throughout her life to offer kindness, encouragement and practical help to others in need.
She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Elaine Dorward-King and Margaret "Missy" Wilson and Charles H. Wilson; two grandchildren and their spouses, Adam F. and Ruthie Wilson, Carissa Dorward Roberson and R. Philip Roberson; three great-grandchildren, Emily A. Beavers, Olive E. Wilson, and Finley R. Roberson; nephews Courtney Brown, Jay Brown and Mark Witwer; and nieces Ellen Brown Meihaus and Sharon Witwer Armour.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 15, 2024 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Etowah with Rev. Rebecca A. Reed officiating.
