Obituary

Freida June East Barnett, 75, of Englewood, died Sunday night, January 17, 2010 at Etowah Health Care Center. A daughter of the late Bill and Minnie Riddle East, she was born in Narrows, Virginia, but lived most of her life in Englewood. She earned a BS degree from Tennessee Wesleyan College and her masters from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She taught at Englewood Elementary School for 31 years, and was a member of Englewood United Methodist Church. She was an avid Lady Vols fan, and she enjoyed reading, playing cards and spending time with her family. She will be remembered for her optimistic attitude, her sense of humor and her ability to provide love and understanding to her family and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Barnett Hairrell. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, James "Coach Red" Barnett of Englewood; one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Bob Brimer of Knoxville; one son, David Barnett of Cleveland; grandchildren, Shelly Hairrell Choat of Englewood, Jake Hairrell and wife Julie of Decatur, Erin Brimer Marlow and husband Daniel of Knoxville, Josh Brimer and wife Ashley of Atlanta, Ga., Chelsey Brimer of Knoxville and Darby Barnett of Cleveland; great-grandchildren, Mikayla and Madeline Choat of Englewood, Bella Marlowe of Knoxville and Mary Jane Barnett of Cleveland; two sisters and brother-in-law, Jane East Flower, and Linda East Coile and husband Dennis, all of Englewood; nephews, Scott Slack of Madisonville and Scott Coile of Athens; nieces, Caycie Crofts of Englewood, Keisha Halcomb of Cleveland and Kim Mason of Athens; and special friend and sister-in-law, Essie Barnett Goforth. Funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010 in the South Chapel with the Rev. Richard Tallent and the Rev. Hugh Bryant officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service. Family and friends will assemble at McMinn Memory Gardens at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan 20th for the committal service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Witness Team at Englewood United Methodist Church, 14 S. Niota Rd., Englewood, TN 37329.
