Harry M. "Tippy" Brown passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Life Care Center of Athens. Harry was born in Englewood on September 14, 1936, to Harry A. and Bonnie M. Brown.
He spent most of his childhood in this area and Sweetwater until 1950, when the family moved to Manchester, Georgia. Tippy graduated from Manchester High School in 1954. He later attended Mercer College in Macon, Georgia and then the University of Georgia in Athens. He graduated in 1958 with a BS in Pharmacy. While there, he played drums in the University of Georgia Redcoat Marching band and was in the Army ROTC. He served in the US Army as a Lieutenant at Fort Knox, KY and was based at Ireland Army Hospital. Tippy was a pharmacist in the north Georgia and Chattanooga areas for many years. He changed gears and careers in 1977 and began working for the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance. For 23 years, he helped to change banking laws and regulations in Georgia and throughout the USA. He retired in 2000 and moved back to Englewood. He really loved history, travel, model railroading, studying his Bible and teaching Sunday school at Englewood United Methodist church. He enjoyed travel, spending time with his family and of course cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs football team as well as the Vols.
Harry is survived by his daughters, Bonnie Brown (Tc Kelly) of Englewood, Cindy McCall (Jeff) of signal Mountain, TN; two sons, David Brown (Jean) of Roseboro, NC, Hank Smith (Annette) of Gadsden, AL; grandsons, Bill Derby (Andrea) and family of Madisonville, Peter McCall of Chattanooga, Christopher Smith (Karen), Richard Smith and John Smith (Nichole) all of Gadsden, AL; two granddaughters, Sara Graham (Jeff) and family of Athens, Katie McCall (Wes Giglio) and family of Chattanooga; special family friends, Alan Matya (Tonya) of Englewood; 13 great-grandchildren; special cousins, Ramona Marshall Key of Florida and Pauletta Johnson of Englewood and a large extended family. Harry was preceded in death by his parents; wife Bettye Jean in 1968; and wife Bettye Jo in 2005.
The Funeral service will be held at 8:00 p.m., Friday, June 30, 2017 in the South Chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with Dr. John Oldham officiating. Family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday prior to the service. Family and friends will assemble at Sunrise Cemetery, Saturday, July 1, 2017 for the 11:00 a.m. committal service.
