James "Jim" Bates, 80, of Etowah, died on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at McMinn Memorial Nursing Home.He was retired from Bowater and was a son of the late Frank M. and Nellie Mae Bates. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Kenneth, Paul, Thomas and Jackie Bates; four sisters, Mary Lou Harris, Martha Sue Webb, Katherine Bates and Edna Rae Bates; three brothers-in-law, Edward Webb, George DeBord and Earnest Begley; one sister-in-law, Helen DeBord; and one stepson and spouse, Eddie and Duel Herrell. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Opal DeBord Bates of Etowah; grandchildren and their spouses, Lori and Doug Justus of Knoxville and Glen and Karen Herrell of Morristown; great-grandchildren, Dustin Herrell, Paul Douglas Justus and Jules Justus; two sisters-in-law, Cynthia Bates and Jean Begley; three brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law, Emmett DeBord, Ira and Barbara DeBord and Lonnie Harris; and several nieces and nephews.Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Green Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Hatcher officiating.Pallbearers will be Doug Justus, Glen Herrell, Dustin Herrell, Steven Davis, Tom DeBord and Mike Begley.No formal visitation will be held.
