A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Jess and Martha Burton. He was of the Baptist faith, and was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Edward Burton; and step-mother, Betsy Burton.

Survivors include his loving wife, Sherry Self Burton of Etowah; one son, Michael Burton of Etowah; two granddaughters, Ashley Nichole Burton and Hope Miller, both of Sweetwater; two step-sisters; a special aunt and her companion, Eva Sue Whitfield and Paul of Chino, California; and devoted friends, Webster Book, Lowell Pruitt and Doug Jackson.

An intimate home memorial with family and special friends will be held at a later date.
