Joel David Harwood, 55, of Etowah, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at his residence. A native of Athens and a lifelong resident of Etowah, he served in the U.S. Air Force. A son of Maxine Harwood and the late Guy Mack Harwood Jr., he was preceded in death by two brothers, Guy Mack Harwood III and James Thomas Harwood; and one niece, Christy Harwood Davis. Survivors include his mother, Maxine Johnston Harwood of Etowah; one brother and sister-in-law, John William " Bill " and Karen Harwood of Columbia, S.C.; three aunts, Helen Johnston Haskins of Athens, Bailey Harwood and Jerry Cooper, and Marilyn Harwood Cook of Hartsville, S.C.; two nephews, William Harwood of Columbia, S.C., and James Thomas Harwood Jr.; and two nieces, Savannah Harwood of Columbia, S.C., and Lori Harwood Goins and her husband, Bo, of Ringgold, Ga. A graveside memorial service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Green Hill Cemetery. No formal visitation will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 581 Hillcrest Circle, Etowah, TN 37331.
