Marie Browning Lambert, 94, of Etowah, TN, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2024 at Etowah Health Care Center.
She was born in Rock, West Virginia on Browning Lambert Mountain to the late Tom and Ella Church Browning. Mrs. Lambert was a longtime resident of Etowah.
Preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Bob Lambert; one son, Michael Eugene of Richlands, VA; one daughter, Patricia Gail Lambert Hooper of Cleveland, TN; and one grandson, Petty Officer Beau A. Prince, Navy Information Operations Command.
Her college years began at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia where she earned her teacher's certificate. When she and her husband moved to TN, she began classes at the University of TN in Knoxville and at Tennessee Wesleyan College. She received her Master's degree in Education and Administration from the University of TN at Chattanooga. She was an elementary school teacher and principal in West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee. She retired from the Etowah City School System. She had a deep love for all the students she was privileged to teach and to be a part of their lives.
She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as Chairman of the Board of the Christian Children's Center. She was very active in the Presbyterian Women Bible Study group. She served on the Board of Directors of the Area-wide Cancer Support Group from it's beginning in 2001 and as a Director on the Board of the Etowah Area Senior Citizens.
She was an avid Orchid Grower and was a member of the Knoxville Smoky Mountain Orchid Scoiety and a member of the nationwide American Orchid Society. She won many awards and honors in many of the southeast shows and well as the Mid-America Orchid Congress, Inc. After her retirement, she enjoyed watercolor painting of old historic building such as the Carnegie Library in downtown Etowah, an old Mill House in Englewood, the mountains, wild flowers and various kinds of orchids.
She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob Jr. and Sandy Lambert of Etowah, Tom and Shannon Lambert of Athens; son-in-law, Rick and Marcia Hooper of Cleveland, TN; grandchildren, Tyler and Candice Hooper of Charleston, Rob and Angie Lambert of Athens, Kristan and Chad Smith of Athens, Blake and Kelli Lambert of Englewood, Trent and Samantha Lambert of Englewood, Kylie and Grant Brown of Athens; great-grandchildren, Lynsi and Dakota Tuck of Etowah, Logan Smith of Athens, Cara and Dylan Plaster of Calhoun, Ella Grace, Ryder and Alex Hooper of Charleston, River Lambert, Raimah Brown; great-great-grandchildren, Phoenix, Hendrix and Finan Tuck, Clara Belle and Callie Plaster.
Funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 23, 2024 in the chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with Dennis Bordwine and Grant Brown officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday prior to the service.
Family and friends will assemble at Green Hill Cemetery, Friday, May 24th for the 11:00 a.m. committal service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Etowah Area Senior Citizens,435 Cooper St., Etowah, TN 37331, or a charity of your choice.
