Marvis Blackwell Brakefield, 94, formerly of Etowah, died Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011, at Autumn Health Care in Fayetteville, N.C. Born Dec. 6, 1916 in Christian County, Ky., she was a daughter of the late James Houston and Mary Elizabeth Blackwell, formerly of South Irvine, Ky. She was a member of Etowah First Christian Church and Etowah Senior Citizens. She worked as a volunteer at Woods Memorial Hospital since 1979 with the Woods Memorial Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Lawrence Brakefield; one sister, Cora Lee VanDyke; and five brothers, Clyde Blackwell, James Blackwell Jr., Lawrence Blackwell, Beverly Gene Blackwell and Mark Blackwell. Survivors include two sisters, Loretta Neal of Texas, and Mabel Vanover of Hamilton, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Teresa Brakefield of London, Ky.; one daughter, Doris Jo Carson of Fayetteville, N.C.; four grandchildren and one spouse, Victor and Tracy Delaire, Shaune Delaire, Shane Brakefield and Dayna Brakefield; one great-granddaughter, Victoria Morgan Delaire; two step-great-granddaughters, Jade and Chelci; and a special friend, Marjorie Gray. Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with Louis Rouse officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Oakdale Cemetery in Irvine, Ky. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
