Obituary

Maxine Harwood, 85 of Etowah, passed away Friday, December 19, 2014 at Starr Regional Nursing Home in Etowah.

Maxine was born on January 29, 1929, the daughter of James Herman Johnston and Sena Mae Williams Johnston. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Mack Harwood, Jr., and sons, Guy Mack Harwood III, James Thomas Harwood, Joel David Harwood and granddaughter, Christie Harwood.

She is survived by her son, John William "Bill" Harwood, his wife, Karen of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Savannah Harwood, William Harwood, Lori Goins, and James Thomas Harwood, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Cody Mosier, Mia Goins, Charlie Goins and Ariel Davis; great-great-grandchild, Chloe Mosier; sister, Helen Haskins, nephew, Todd Haskins, and wife Diane of Birmingham, AL; niece, Allison Dender of Riceville, TN; great-nephews, Evan Haskins and Chase Dender; great-nieces Allison Haskins and Liza Dender.

As a lifelong resident of Etowah, Maxine loved and served her community in many capacities, She served as a Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, worked tirelessly on the restoration of the L&N Depot and was instrumental in organizing the community celebrations of the fourth of July, she was recognized as the Woman of the Year by the Etowah Chamber of Commerce in 1987, and was elected Tennessee State Committee Woman for the Republican Party in which she was active for many years and was a Founding Board Member of the Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association.

Professionally, Maxine assisted her husband Guy in the operations for their business, Etowah Welding and Parts; she worked for the Bowater Credit Union, and later worked in the McMinn County Executive's office as the Head of Tourism.

Maxine always had a zest for life and enjoyed everything from square dancing to river rafting and playing bridge to climbing Mount Le Conte. She would always have an amazing story to tell with a twinkle in her eye. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 3, 2015 in the South Chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with Rev. Ted Painter officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., prior to the service. Interment will follow the service to Green Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Maxine's honor to the Etowah Historic Commission for the benefit of the L&N Depot, 727 Tennessee Ave. S., Etowah, TN 37331.
