Obituary

Mazie Meeks passed away on Friday, January 25, 2019 in Athens, TN.  Mazie was born in Mableton, GA on March 7, 1941 and was the daughter of G.C. and Zelma Woodall Brooks.  Mazie graduated from South Cobb High School, class of 1959.  She married her high school sweetheart Joe Meeks.  They have celebrated 59 wonderful years of marriage.

Mazie is survived by husband Joe Meeks of Englewood, sister Kathy and Rick Rhodes (Atlanta) and brother-in-law Ed Thompson (Atlanta).  Daughters Kelly and Steve Self of Englewood and Karen and Mike Newton of Flowery Branch, GA.  Grandchildren Josh and Leighann Giles, Colby Newton, Courtney and Mario Gonzalez, Chandler Newton, Savannah Self.   Great-grandchildren Chase, Landyn, Adleigh, Jaxson and many nieces and nephews in TN and GA.

Mazie took joy in loving her family, her husband Joe, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She was a devout Christian woman, who loved her church family at Englewood Christian Church. She was the church secretary, and one of her greatest joys was singing in church.  On Sundays, you could always hear her beautiful alto voice in the choir.

Mazie was born and raised in Georgia with her three sisters and brother.  After she and Joe married and began raising their two girls, they bought a hunting resort and moved to Tennessee.  Mazie and Joe worked side by side every day in the hunting resort.  Mazie was truly a woman for all seasons as she could do anything.  She loved her pets. She had dogs and cats and whatever stray animals her daughters brought home from school.  She was an amazing cook and could pull a fantastic meal together in a minute's notice.  We often wondered and are pretty sure the roast we had on Sundays was not a "beef" roast, but it was delicious.

She and Joe always had a garden, and they shared fresh vegetables with family and friends. Plus, she canned and made preserves, jellies and jams.  Her grandchildren praise her for a lot of things, but especially her pancakes, and the entire family loved Mazie's biscuits.  Her birthday cakes were beautiful and delicious. She made Kelly and Steve's wedding cake.  She saw a picture in Southern Living and announced that this is what we are making!

Mazie enjoyed sewing, made prom dresses, wedding dresses, Halloween costumes, and when she finished that, she could give you a haircut.  She may have even been horseback riding or walked a few miles that day!  She was a member of CAGE, which is a group that works to improve the community. Mazie and Joe could always be spotted in the stands at Karen's basketball games at Central and Tennessee Wesleyan.  Mazie enjoyed her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's events.  Whether it was a graduation, soccer game, football game, basketball game, baseball game or piano recital, Nana was there cheering on her "grands."

Mazie was a joyful, caring, and loving person.   During her illness, she always had a sweet smile for you.   She may have had Alzheimer's, but Alzheimer's did not have her.  She always had the ability to love and laugh. We honor, celebrate, and cherish her life here on earth.

We are broken-hearted and are going to miss her, but we know that she is in the presence of God with her loved ones.  Mazie will live on in our hearts forever.

The family will receive friends from 5:00pm – 7:00pm on Monday, January 28, 2019 at Englewood Christian Church.  The funeral service will follow at 7:00pm.  The graveside service will be Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at McMinn Memory Gardens in Athens, TN.  Bordwine Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
