Obituary

Mildred Jane "Janie" Newman, 87, of Delano, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at Woods Memorial Hospital in Etowah. A daughter of the late Roy and Ollie Grace Tullock, she was a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County. She was a lifelong member of Delano Baptist Church and one of the original members of the Tuesday Morning Prayer Group led by Sallie Curtis, and attended regularly until she went into the nursing home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Alfred Newman; one son, Rick Newman; one daughter, Cathy Newman Leamon; brothers and sisters, Buck Sartin, Willie Burris, Flossie Evelyn McClane, James "Cloudy" Tullock, Jack Tullock, W.R. "Jody" Tullock and John Tullock. "Janie" was best known for her cooking. She worked for several years in the lunch rooms at the Delano Grammar School, Benton Elementary and Polk County High School.Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Karen Newman of Delano; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Lois "Pig" Miller of Delano, and Betty and C.H. Sterling of Maryville; one sister-in-law, Helen C. Tullock of Delano; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.The family would like to thank all of the caregivers at Woods Memorial Nursing Home for the tender care they provided over the past 15 months. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Thursday in the South Chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with Dr. David Tullock officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday prior to the service. Family and friends will assemble Friday at Delano Cemetery for the 11 a.m. committal service. Pallbearers will be Kevin Newman, Josh Newman, Daniel Leamon, Jerry Miller, Bill Miller and Doug Wood. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to be given to debt retirement for Joey Hall, Delano Baptist Church, P.O. Box 25, Delano, TN 37325 (Attn: Rhonda Chancey, Treasurer).
