Vesta Oveline Choat Massingale, "Mother," "Aunt Oveline," "Nana," passed away peacefully on May 31, 2019, surrounded by her children and family.  Loved by so many, she filled her 94 healthy years with faith, family,   Church, her home and community.  She was born on February 1, 1925, daughter of Franklin Nelson and Margaret "Maggie" Tallent Choat in the Goodsprings community of McMinn County, Tennessee, just outside of Etowah, the fourth of twelve children.  She married Harold "Breezy"   Massingale, also of Etowah, on April 17, 1943, and was his devoted wife until his death 42 years later.

She is survived by her sons, Dr. Lynn Massingale and his wife Cindy of Knoxville, Frank Massingale and his wife Evalyn of Etowah; grandchildren, Christie Massingale Kilburn of Nashville, Jarrod and Casey Massingale of Etowah, Sandi Wilson of Knoxville, Chris Snyder of Cincinnati; great-grandchildren, Avery and Charlie Kilburn, Caden, Mace and Marley Massingale, Alex, Baylor, Sidney and Preston Wilson, and Grayson and Hayes Snyder.  She is also survived by siblings: Bill Choate of Memphis, Dan Choat and Gene Choate of Etowah, Pat Choate Klein of Knoxville, and many beloved nieces and nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.             We rejoice in the knowledge that she is now reunited in Heaven with those who preceded her in death, including infant son, Bennie Harold, her husband, parents and siblings: Nelson Choat, Ernest Choat, Robert Choate, Martha Lu Armstrong, Daphne Blair, Arbutus Mayfield and Joyce Culpepper.

She was a graduate of Etowah High School Class of 1943 and a faithful member of Goodsprings Baptist Church, where she was a beloved Sunday- School teacher, choir member, active in many phases of church life and was concerned about church and Sunday- School attendance.  She served as President of the Woman's Missionary Union (WMU) for many years.  She was proud to have worked for the Daily Post Athenian and retired from First National Bank from which she retired after more than twenty years.

While we will profoundly miss the gifts of her positive nature, unconditional love, wisdom and gentle strength, we know that we have been blessed and that she is in perfect peace with her Heavenly Father.

The family will receive visitors on Monday, June 3 ^rd from 5-8pm at Bordwine Funeral Home, Etowah, Tennessee.  The Memorial Service will be on Tuesday, June 4 ^th at 11 am, at Bordwine, followed by a graveside service at Goodsprings Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, any memorial gifts may be made to the Goodsprings Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 480, Etowah, TN 37331.  Pink is her favorite color, and guests are welcome to wear it.
