Obituary

Tom J. Oakley, a beloved dentist and community servant, passed away peacefully at his residence on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the age of 67. Born on March 5, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, Tom touched the lives of many throughout his extensive career and his deep commitment to his faith and family.

Graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from Lee College, now known as Lee University, Tom further advanced his education by obtaining his Doctorate of Dental Surgery Degree from the University of Tennessee Memphis Dental School. For over 30 years, he practiced dentistry in Athens, Tennessee, where he not only treated his patients with skill and compassion but also formed lasting connections within the community.

Tom's joy in life stemmed from his dedication to serving the Lord and others. He was particularly passionate about mission work in Honduras, where he provided dental care to those in need. His selfless acts exemplified his commitment to making a difference in the world around him.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Tom was a man of many talents. He loved music, playing the trombone, and sharing his vocal gifts with others. His love for music was matched only by his devotion to his family, who were the center of his universe.

Tom is survived by his wife, Karen Oakley; his son and daughter-in-law, T.J. and Sarah Oakley; his daughter, Candace Oakley; and his cherished grandchildren, Gabby Oakley, Isabelle Oakley, Judah Oakley, and Aviana Peak. He also leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Lisa Oakley, his sister and brother-in-law, Twyla and Mark Chumney, along with several nieces and nephews, who all adored him.

Tom was preceded in death by his father, Jack Oakley Jr., and his mother, Char Oakley. His legacy of kindness, service, and love will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable life.

Private services will be held.
