Obituary

Virginia Johnson Dyke-Watson went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at the age of 90 surrounded by her family.

She was born on September 15, 1934 to Charles and Allie Johnson of the Nonaburg community in Englewood, TN. She spent her entire life here in McMinn County. She attended Coltharp Elementary and Englewood High School, where she graduated in 1952 with honors and as Salutatorian of her class. She also was the editor of the Englewood Rams school paper and served as the D. A. R Representative. After high school, she went to work at Eureka Garment Company, where she worked for 43 years before retirement. But Virginia was never one to stay still, so she went back to work at The Sundry Store in Etowah, TN for 17 years before finally retiring in 2015 at the age of 80. In her spare time, she enjoyed maintaining a beautiful yard and garden, working on the farm, raising and selling strawberries, sewing, collecting banana boxes, and studying God's word. Though she attended several churches throughout her life, Goodsprings Baptist Church in Etowah was her home church. For many years, she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, served on many church committees, and sang in the choir. She enjoyed teaching bible studies throughout McMinn and surrounding counties. Her passion was spreading the Gospel of Jesus throughout the world by sending Bibles through many mission organizations.

She is survived by her husband, Hoyt Austin Watson of Etowah; son and family, Alan Dyke (Darlene and Jadyn); granddaughter, Alison Phelps (Shawn); brother, Ted Johnson (Donna); and cherished sisters- in-law, nieces and nephews.

Virginia was preceded in death by her first husband, Wayne Dyke (m.1962); parents, Charles and Allie Johnson; brothers, Bob and Bill Johnson; and sisters, Louise Moses Plemons and Mary Gray.

The family would like to thank several people for their commitment for caring for Virginia in her final days: Alan's wife and bonus daughter, Darlene Dyke and Jadyn Hodgins for their hours of watching over Virginia at home day and night; Traci Grime, NP, Virginia's Home Health Care Provider; and Adoration Hospice of Cleveland for helping keep Virginia comfortable. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for everything you've done for our mother and mamaw.

Funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Monday, July 21st in the Chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with Dr. David Lones officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday prior to the service.

Family and friends will assemble at Bordwine Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at 10:00a.m. and go in procession to McMinn Memory Gardens for the 11:00 a.m. committal service

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Virginia's memory to the Gideon's International to continue her service of sending God's word throughout the world, to Bucker International's Shoes for Orphaned Souls, or to the Alzheimer's Association to further research to cure Alzheimer's and Dementia.
