Obituary

Wendell "Dusty" Newman passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Memorial Hospital surrounded by those who loved him most.

Preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Margaret Burnette Newman; daughter, Janet Alisa Newman; parents, Horace Ruel and Lula Kelley Newman; brothers, Reethel, Jack, Kenneth, J.L., Alfred, H.L.,Thomas and Floyd; sisters, Barbara Franks and Patsy Manning.

He is survived by his daughter, Anita and Husband, Ernie Droke; beloved grandchildren, Taylor and wife, Chelsea, Ryan and Abby Droke; brother-in-law, Wayne Mull and his daughter, Kellye; sister-in-law, Elaine Ward and her son, David; sister-in-law, Evelyn Scroggins; and many nieces and nephews.

A U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War, he served as a communications specialist and CBR warfare instructor in a guided missile group at Fort Bliss, TX and White Sands Proving Ground at Alamogordo, NM, where he became lifelong friends with Sam Capps and Lamar Oldham.

He was a past Worshipful Master of Reliance Lodge #636 of the Free & Accepted Masons, and a deacon and member of Coghill Baptist Church.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 30, 2019 in chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Hatcher officiating. Family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service. Interment will follow service to Green Hill Cemetery.

Ernie, Taylor, and Ryan Droke, Steve and Marvin Newman, and David Ward will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Coghill Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Friends of the Etowah Carnegie Library in Memoriam of Dusty, where he was a frequent patron.
