Obituary

William Franklin "Frank" Landreth, Sr., 88, of Etowah, TN passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013 at his residence. A native of Knoxville, and resident of Etowah for the past 60 years. He was a son of the late Robert Kinzer Landreth and Audrey Anderson Landreth Hellard, member of Church on the Rock and a retired engineer of the L &N Railroad. Preceded in death by his loving wife, Addie "Sue" Brown Landreth; 1 brother and 2 sisters. Frank joined the Armed Services, at the young age of 16, with his mother signing for him to serve his county in the United States Army. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed in 1941. After a tour in Hawaii, he went to Solomon Island and Guada Canal Vella Lavella, leaving there in 1943, to volunteer for a secret mission. He had 6 bouts of malaria before he got to Burma. In 1943 and 1944, he was on a secret mission with Merrill's Marauders in Burma. He walked 1,000 miles across the north end of Burma fighting the Japanese along the way. Frank was one of the 300 survivors out of the 3,000 men that started with Merrill's Marauders. Survivors include Son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Nancy Landreth of Ooltewah, TN, 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Jerry Bryan of Etowah and Sherry Condee and Craig Holmes of Niota; 4 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.Funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 19th in the South Chapel, of Bordwine Funeral Home. Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, prior to the service. Family and friends will assemble at Green Hill Cemetery, Wednesday, March 20th for the 11:00 a.m., committal service with Military Honors.
