William Jerry Melton, 69, of Athens, died Monday, March 5, 2012, at his residence. A native of Athens, he retired from Athens Utilities Board, as a Meter Department supervisor with 41 years of service. He was a member of First Baptist of Athens and was a son of the late Howard and Pauline Melton. Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Edie Melton of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, William Timothy and Emily Melton of Riceville; one daughter and son-in-law, Stacey R. and Rusty Byrd of Kingston; grandchildren, Heath Melton, Christie Miraflor, Carly Melton, Clancey Melton, Auston Byrd and Elizabeth Byrd; one great-granddaughter, Savannah Melton; his father-in-law and his wife, of Olmstead, Ky.; several brothers and sisters-in-law; one uncle, Kelmer Melton of Lenior City; one aunt, Jo Melton of Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.; and several special cousins. A private graveside service was held Thursday at McMinn Memory Gardens with the Rev. Oran Creasman officiating. Pallbearers were Roy Robertson III, Rusty Byrd, Jason Robertson, Buddy Martin, Roger Robertson, Jake Emberton and Auston Byrd.
