Obituary

W.J. Harris, 86, of Englewood, died Saturday night, January 9, 2010 at his residence. A native of Englewood and resident of McMinn County for most of his life, he was a son of the late William Joseph Harris Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth Cook Harris. He was a volunteer with the Sheriff's Department for more that 50 years, and was an active Constable for the 3rd District in McMinn County for about 25 years. He was a faithful member of Englewood First Church of God, where he served as the church treasurer for 35 years, and was a member of the trustee board for many years. He was a member of the Lion's Club and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed being with his family and church; raising and showing registered bird dogs and beagles, and was always excited when he won ribbons and trophies. He loved fishing and hunting with his grandson and friends, and enjoyed teaching the grandchildren how to ride horses. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Dortha Wampler Harris, who passed away in January 2005; an infant son, William Cecil Harris; a daughter, Barbara Harris Howell, who passed away in August, 2009; six brothers, Ray, John, Ora, Richard, Willy and Schaffer; and four sisters, Maggie Lou Harris, Delia Harris, Susie Douchette and Dorothy Carlson. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Bennie Jones of Athens, and Jan and Mike Dingess of Englewood; one son-in-law, Rich Howell of Englewood; grandchildren and spouses, Lynn Carroll of Englewood, Shona and Bob Lee of Knoxville, Bryan Sledge of Athens, Mallory and Madison Dingess of Englewoo9d, Joe and Shayne Jones of Athens, and Dawn Wallace of Niota; ; great-grandchildren, Aaron Carroll and wife Shauna of Athens, Kim Jones Mortiz and husband Neil of Cleveland, Bridget Jones Morrow and husband Kirk of Athens, Travis Wallace of Niota, Skylar and Megan Jones of Athens, Michael Lee of Knoxville and Luke Morris of Englewood; Great-great-grandchildren, Logan and Dylan Carroll, Will Sledge, Chandler Womac, Kennedy, Arianna and Landon Mortiz, Taylor, Ethan and Conner Morrow and Tyler Lee; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010 in the South Chapel with Pastor Kevin Cummins and the Rev. Morgan Davis conducting the service. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service. Family and friends will assemble at McMinn Memory Gardens at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan.. 13th for the committal service, which will conclude with the White Dove Liberation Ceremony. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Englewood First Church of God Building Fund, 1340 Highway 39 E., Englewood, TN 37329.
